Organized Labor

A fundamental principle of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Community Services Program is that union members are first and foremost a citizen of the community who strives to make the community an excellent place to live, work, raise children, and retire.

This idea complements the mission of United Way of Allen County and resulted in a partnership that began in 1958.

In Fort Wayne, this partnership is working to build a better community and provide services for those in need. United Way partners with Labor on such projects as the eight-week Community Education Program for individuals who are experiencing layoff or job change, assistance with the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, Earned Income Tax Credit program, senior health fair, Day of Caring, and giving in their respected workplace campaigns.

Union representatives are active at all levels of United Way, including the Board of Directors, agency relations, and the Community Service Committee. This partnership has provided mutual support for one another as part of our history. Dislocations, plant closings, and layoffs are possible in the realm of organized labor. Fighting for those who are working hard but struggling to survive is a shared interest that keeps the partnership active, along with giving respect and dignity to those who have lost it through no fault of their own.
