2-1-1 Resource Center


ABOUT | 2-1-1 is a national dialing code for free access to health and human service information and referral. 2-1-1 connects people in need to community-based organizations. Today, 2-1-1 reaches 100 percent of Indiana and approximately 94 percent of the U.S. population.

The United Way 2-1-1 resource center in Allen County opened in November 2003. In 2017, Community Navigators answered 39,000 calls throughout the state, and connected callers to basic needs and more. The top five needs included; housing assistance, utility payment assistance, access to food, legal aid and healthcare assistance. 98 percent of callers surveyed said they will call again if needed.

In addition to connecting individuals to resources, 2-1-1 helps track gaps, duplications and trends in social services. 2-1-1 is essential in disaster relief, helping to reduce non-emergency calls to 911 by connecting victims, donors and volunteers with social service agencies.

In July of 2018 2-1-1 transitioned to address social determinants of health; the conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. The new screening tool, developed in partnership with IN211, Accountable Health Community’s Health-Related Social Needs Screening Tool and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, allows us to address the underlying causes of our caller’s needs.

The 2-1-1 resource center provides outreach to United Way of Adams, Allen, Blackford, DeKalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, LaGrange, LaPorte, Marshall, Noble, St. Joseph, Steuben, Wabash, Wells an Whitley counties.
