NEWS RELEASE | Volunteers Offer Free Tax Preparation
FORT WAYNE (Jan. 22, 2020) – Free tax help is available to area residents from Jan. 27 to April 13, 2020. For residents with income under $56,000 in 2019, IRS certified volunteer tax preparers help residents file their taxes & claim available credits. United Way partners with Volunteer Center and Catholic Charities Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend to offer the VITA program in Allen, DeKalb, Noble, and Steuben counties.
This free tax preparation service brings more than $3.5 million back into the local community in refunds and saves residents nearly $550,000 in preparation fees, keeping more money in the pockets of those who need it the most.
This year’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, will be held at two sites within Allen County—at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1101 S. Lafayette St., and the American Red Cross, 1212 California Road.
“As one of United Way’s focus areas is to help families gain financial stability, the VITA program is critical in helping our families save each dollar possible on their tax preparation fees” explains Tiffany Bailey, VP of Community Impact at United Way of Allen County, “By keeping those dollars in the pockets of our families it could mean the difference between paying bills to rebuild credit, building their saving, or furthering their education”.
The VITA program continues to show success for all agencies and individuals involved year to year, however, it cannot be done without our volunteers. If you would like to learn more about becoming a VITA volunteer in Allen County, you may contact Volunteer Center at (260) 424-3505 or www.volunteerfortwayne.org.
