NEWS RELEASE | United Way of Allen County Recipient of Strong Start for Kindergarten Prize

FORT WAYNE, IN (November 4, 2019) – United Way of Allen County is honored to be one of nine recipients of the Strong Start for Kindergarten Prize across the state presented by Early Learning Indiana through a new initiative funded by Indiana’s Preschool Development Grant. Both organizations believe strongly in the same goal, “a smooth transition into kindergarten creates a foundation for children to build upon throughout the rest of their K-12 journey” as stated in the Early Learning Indiana press release.

This prize United Way of Allen County has been awarded is an illustration of the impact that a community can make when they come together and LIVE UNITED. United Way of Allen County celebrated its seventh year of Kindergarten Countdown with Fort Wayne Community Schools and East Allen County Schools this past summer. This four-week summer program is aimed at helping kids prepare for school in the fall and partners with local organizations such as Parkview Health to conduct vision and hearing screenings on all the children participating in the program as well as with the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to offer immunizations and well child checks. Partnering with Parkview Health is an example of the valued community support we receive in breaking down barriers for our youngest generation.

Kindergarten Countdown is one of the many Childhood Success efforts United Way of Allen County supports to help prepare children for success in school and beyond. The goal of Kindergarten Countdown is to help families better navigate and prepare for the crucial transition into Kindergarten while helping students be better prepared for learning.  Kindergarten Countdown was developed to help children who may be at risk of starting behind their peers.  Using a hands-on, exploratory approach to learning, the program focuses on the practice of essential academic and social development skills that are fundamental to a child’s ability to learn.

United Way of Allen County will be accepting this prize at Purdue Fort Wayne – Walb Ballroom on Thursday, November 7 at 4:00 p.m. following the Early Learning Summit for Economic Development where business leaders from across the state will be gathered to learn more about how they can support and invest in early childhood education in strategies such as this prize. The media is invited to ask questions and take photos at the event.
