FORT WAYNE (July 30, 2008) – Regal Beloit has captured the highest honor for United Way of Allen County campaign partners. Regal Beloit employees were recently presented with the Spirit of Giving award, originally created by longtime United Way donor Will Clark. In addition to having 14 leadership givers, their company participated in United Way’s Day of Caring and was involved in many other community activities. Regal Beloit used all the best practices for running a campaign, and this paid off with a 46% increase in employee participation over the past three years.

How long have you been with UPS and what is your position?

I began my UPS career in June of 2005. I am currently an Account Manager for UPS in the Business Development Department in Fort Wayne. I also serve as Business Developments’ United Way contact, coordinating community volunteer activities.

I have been a donor to United Way for 34 years.

Aside from being a donor, how have you been involved with United Way?

I'm in my 4th term as a board member. In addition, I have served as Day of Caring Chair, Campaign Chair and Board Chair and just generally worked on the campaign a lot in past years.

What first convinced you to give to United Way?

FORT WAYNE (June 9, 2008) – The 7th Annual American Pride Ride, a motorcycle ride and auction benefiting United Way of Allen County, is set for Saturday, June 28, 2008.

Over the last six years, local organized labor has planned the American Pride Ride and raised more than $60,000 for United Way of Allen County and the services it funds. Approximately 350 riders take part each year.

FORT WAYNE (May 25, 2008) – A communitywide effort to offer free tax help to people who qualified for a 2007 Earned Income Tax Credit yielded $1.43 million for filers who took advantage of the program.

Of that amount, nearly $600,000 represented Earned Income Tax Credits.

The total number of individual returns submitted to the IRS during the effort was 1,362.

FORT WAYNE (June 4, 2008) – Work projects and volunteers are being sought for United Way of Allen County’s 16th annual Day of Caring set for August 8, 2008.

Day of Caring is a communitywide effort to match volunteers with projects such as painting or cleaning at local non-profits or other organizations. United Way is asking organization leaders to submit potential projects to Jamie Garwood at United Way no later than June 30, 2008. Garwood can be reached at 260.422.4776.

Fort Wayne Newspapers NIE (Newspaper In Education) and United Way of Allen County are proud to announce the two winners in the 2008 Write What’s Right Essay Contest.

Second grader Kelsey Mathias from Croninger Elementary School and eighth grader Veronica Frecker from St. Joseph Hessen Cassel won the contest with their poems about diversity.

Kelsey and Veronica were chosen from nearly 200 entries to receive a new laptop computer. The computers were provided by the IPFW Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

Paul Shaffer and his wife Dorothy came to Fort Wayne in 1952 and for the past 56 years, they’ve been diligently working to make the community a better place for everyone.

“I think it’s an obligation to help others,” says Mr. Shaffer. “We’re very fortunate and it’s our obligation to give back.”

I joined FWCS in June of 2006 as Director of Public Affairs. Previously, I was with Lincoln Financial Group and Superior Essex.

Women United's Power of the Purse Event
A fundraiser to support early childhood literacy efforts in Allen County. The evening will include both live and silent auctions of new, gently used and celebrity-owned designer purses.
