Two and a-half years after it was introduced in Allen County, the FamilyWize prescription drug discount card program is being credited with saving residents more than a quarter of a million dollars. From March of 2007 – when the United Way of Allen County began offering the program locally – through September of this year, use of the FamilyWize cards has resulted in savings totaling $258,561, according to figures released today by the Allen County Board of Commissioners. FORT WAYNE (September 17, 2009) – United Way of Allen County is calling on local residents to “Live United” and support essential social services by donating to this year’s annual Community Campaign. The local United Way Board of Directors has set the 2009-10 workplace campaign goal at $4.8 million. During the 2008-09 workplace campaign, United Way raised $4.7 million.

United Way of Allen County and Organized Labor have scheduled their annual Senior Health Fair for Friday, October 2, 2009, from 8 a.m. until noon at Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities. The 17th Annual Senior Health Fair is sponsored by Parkview Home Health & Hospice and everyone is invited to attend.

Read To Me, a collaboration between SCAN, Healthier Moms and Babies, East Wayne Street Center, United Way of Allen County’s Women’s Initiative, and a dedicated group of volunteers and companies, is trying to collect 15,000 new and gently used children’s books to use over the next 12 months in Allen County.

Approximately 800 volunteers are heading out into the community today for the 17th annual United Way Day of Caring. Fifty-five teams from about 45 local businesses, organizations and organized labor are rolling up their sleeves and working on service projects throughout the Fort Wayne area. NIPSCO is the signature sponsor for this year’s Day of Caring.

United Way of Allen County is asking local residents to donate to a new “Help for Hard Times” fund, set up recently to meet the increasing needs for basic services such as food, shelter and health care.

FORT WAYNE (June 16, 2009) – United Way of Allen County has successfully recruited 200 volunteers to work this summer with children who struggle with reading. The volunteer recruitment is part of Learn United, a ten-year effort to ensure all students read at grade level by the end of third grade.

More than $1.7 million was returned to Allen County residents this year as part of the Earned Income Tax Credit program; this represents a twenty-one percent increase over last year’s amount. The program also saved customers more than $150,000 in tax preparation and e-filing fees.

Women United's Power of the Purse Event
A fundraiser to support early childhood literacy efforts in Allen County. The evening will include both live and silent auctions of new, gently used and celebrity-owned designer purses.
