United Way’s 2-1-1 Center is celebrating National 2-1-1 Day with an Open House on Friday, February 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Open House will take place in United Way’s Carriage House, which is home to the 2-1-1 Center. The Carriage House is located at 334 E. Berry St. behind United Way of Allen County’s main offices.

United Way of Allen County has announced the officers and new members of the organization’s 2012 Board of Directors. Debra Williams, Parkview Health, is the new Board Chair; the Honorable Wendy Davis, Allen Superior Court, is the Chair-Elect; Steve Smith, Allied Physicians, is the Treasurer; Tory Richardson, Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority, is the Secretary; and Ron Turpin, Lincoln Financial, is the immediate Past Chair.

The Fort Wayne Area Planning Council on Homelessness will hold a candlelight memorial walk on the longest night of the year, December 21, 2011 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Rescue Mission, 301 W. Superior St. The group will walk to the Headwaters Park West Pavilion for a short memorial service and will then walk back to the Rescue Mission for refreshments. Members of the public are invited to join the walk.

The Volunteer Center RSVP is seeking volunteers to help file tax returns for local residents who cannot prepare their basic tax returns or cannot afford to pay a preparer. Volunteers are essential in helping low-income residents file for tax credits that can help them pay less in taxes and therefore have more money for essentials such as rent, utilities, food and health care.

Area residents interested in helping local children succeed in school are invited to attend a Learn United Volunteer Fair scheduled for October 6, 2011 at the Allen County Public Library in meeting rooms A, B and C. Two sessions are available; one will begin at noon and end at 1:00 p.m. and the other will begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of the volunteer fair will be to introduce residents to volunteer opportunities available at ten local agencies that serve area youth.

United Way of Allen County leaders are challenging the community to increase giving to a level that would bring the organization’s fundraising in line with the state average. At a news conference and tour of several Agency Partners, volunteer Campaign Chair Steve Smith announced the goal of $5,339,823. This is approximately nine percent greater than what the community pledged during the 2010-11 campaign, which totaled $4.9 million.
