United Way, Indiana's NewsCenter and area McDonald's are teaming up to provide local children in need with school supplies. Drop off new school supplies at local McDonald's and receive a free small coffee or beverage. All supplies will go to children living in the county in which the supplies are donated. United Way of Allen County has hired Fort Wayne native Lanah K. Hake as its new Director of Education Initiatives; she is charged with leading the organization’s Learn United initiative. Hake oversees United Way of Allen County’s efforts to improve the reading skills of children across Allen County. In particular, Hake manages Learn United, a 10-year initiative focused on building a broad base of community volunteers via www.LearnUnited.org who are matched with local children needing literacy support.

Newly compiled statistics show that low- and moderate-income Allen County residents claimed more than $2 million in tax credits this year, thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit program. A total of 4,977 local residents received free tax assistance provided by 125 IRS trained and certified tax volunteers. More than $2.1 million was returned to these residents this year as part of the Earned Income Tax Credit program; this represents a $400,000 increase over last year’s amount. The program also saved customers more than $170,000 in tax preparation and e-filing fees.

Recently released statistics show that The Fort Wayne-area collected more pounds of food than any other similarly sized community in the nation during the May 8 Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. Area letter carriers, schools and residents contributed more than 622,000 pounds of food this year. Last year, the community gathered 453,513 pounds and the total in 2008 was 352,000 pounds. All food collected stays local; it is distributed to food pantries throughout the region. Campbell’s Soup rewards winning communities with 1,000 cans of donated food.

United Way of Allen County’s Learn United initiative is in search of approximately 200 volunteers to help elementary students improve their literacy skills over the summer. “Summer Reading Buddies” are needed June 14 through August 13 at a variety of times and locations. Volunteers may sign up for as little as one hour a week for two weeks, and as much as several hours a week for ten weeks.

Longtime Fort Wayne philanthropists Ian and Mimi Rolland were honored with United Way’s Bill Latz Award for Leadership on May 19, 2010. The award was presented during United Way’s annual leadership reception at the Lincoln Financial Group Event Center at Parkview Field.

United Way of Allen County Board Chair Ron Turpin announced today that United Way reached its $4.8 million workplace campaign goal for the 2009-10 campaign. The announcement came at United Way’s annual Community Celebration at the Public Safety Academy of Northeast Indiana.

The 9th annual American Pride Ride is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010. The Motorcycle Yahtzee Run is hosted by local Organized Labor to raise money for United Way of Allen County. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the first out is 9:30 a.m. with the last in at 3 p.m. The best Yahtzee score earns $100, second best earns $75 and the worst score wins $50.

United Way Worldwide recently recognized Wells Fargo with a prestigious Summit award for exceptional volunteerism. The award is a testament to actions the company and its employees took to improve lives and local communities over the past year.
