Day of Caring

2011 Day of Caring

deemed a resounding success!

Approximately 1,200 volunteers headed out into the community Thursday, August 4 for the 19th annual United Way Day of Caring. Teams from more than 60 local businesses, organizations and organized labor rolled up their sleeves and worked on more than 65 service projects throughout the Fort Wayne area. NIPSCO was the signature sponsor for this year’s Day of Caring.

The day kicked off with a breakfast at Headwaters Park WEST at 7:30 a.m. During the breakfast, volunteers learned about the service projects and how they impact the area and about the work of United Way of Allen County.

“Day of Caring really represents what United Way is all about,” said Todd Stephenson, president and CEO of United Way of Allen County. “Day of Caring brings together people from all walks of life to serve one another and to make our community a better place for everyone, particularly individuals in need.”

United Way’s Day of Caring gets volunteers directly involved in improving the community. This year, Day of Caring had a LIVE UNITED theme; everyone working together to build a better community. Projects included cleaning, painting and landscaping at non-profit agencies; private residences screened by NeighborLink; and child care centers, after-school youth program sites and schools. Day of Caring began in 1993 as a general sprucing up of the YWCA campus by 250 volunteers; it has since evolved into a massive effort that brings community volunteers face-to-face with local nonprofit and community organizations.
