Alexis de Tocqueville

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was created in 1984 by United Way of America to recognize the premier level of leadership donors who invest a minimum of $10,000 annually to their local United Way. The society is named in honor of Tocqueville, a French aristocrat, legislator, prosecutor and author of the two-volume “Democracy in America.” The Paris-born Tocqueville penned “Democracy” after visiting the United States in 1831 and coming away with a profound respect for this country’s spirit of helping others in times of need.

Members of Allen County’s Tocqueville Society give generously because they believe a strong human services system is vital to a healthy, thriving community.

In the past two years, the Tocqueville membership roster has included these Allen County residents or foundations:

($50,000-$74,999)

  • Zollner Family Foundation

($25,000-$49,999)

  • Pay for 45 children to have a YMCA membership and participate in many other camp and program activities.
  • Provide mobility training for 10 people who are blind. The training will enable them to remain independent.
  • Pay the entire electric bill for a transitional home for women and children.
  • Provide food and transitional housing for 25 clients.
  • Provide 26,000 balanced meals – enough to feed 1,730 hungry people for five days.

The society welcomes new members.
